Hilda Smith, MBE, a leading Welsh campaigner for older people has died, on 27 March 2013 aged 94.

Hilda Smith, MBEHilda No.1 - for emailsma Hilda Smith, a leading UK co-operator and Welsh campaigner for older people, died on 27 March 2013 aged 94. She was a strong woman who constantly fought for the things that she believed in and was well respected for her infectious enthusiasm and practical ideas to bring about equality and social justice.
Hilda Smith was active in the consumer, feminist, co-operative and labour movements for over 50 years.
Retiring to Wales in 1986, she established the Newport U3A, the Welsh Food Alliance, the Welsh Progressive Co-operators and the social co-operative movement in Wales.

As a former nurse and social worker, Hilda Smith was a force to be reckoned with. As an active member of the Welsh Government’s Older Persons Advisory Committee, she made a large contribution to ageing policy in Wales.
She campaigned on nutrition, medication, food, social care and public health issues. Unfortunately she was unable to personally receive from the Queen her MBE awarded in the 2013 New Year's Honours List for ‘Services to Vulnerable and Older People’.
Her son David said, “With masses of experience of public bodies, Hilda always focused upon practical solutions and public participation. She believed that people power could make a difference”.
